Are your ambitions putting strain on your personal relationships? In a groundbreaking study shared in the Harvard Business Review, researchers from the University of Oklahoma wanted to know what strategies go-getters were employing to keep the peace with their significant others. Here's what they found, and what they recommend.
Let's skip straight to the good stuff, a quick list of do's and don't's:
- Letting your partner know in advance when you're expecting extra work? ✅
- Telling your partner that all this hustle is all for a projected payoff? ❌
- Asking for your partner's consent to spend a particular window of time away, deep in work? ✅
- Reminding your partner of their previous agreement to occasionally heavy work conditions? ❌
- Talking through the logistics of what your partner might need in your absence (childcare, meal delivery, etc.)? ✅
Long term, though, this is only half of the equation. What are work-centered strategies for staying on the right side of the work-life balance? The headlines from the research say that clarifying what works requires you is a good start. "Citizenship crafting," or choosing extra responsibilities that align with your interests and long-term goals will certainly add to your satisfaction. And the golden rule? Communication, communication, communication.
